Acceptable use.
1. Scope
This policy forms part of the Terms of Service and applies to everything you do on Obiter. It replaces the short list that previously sat inside the Terms, and it is longer for one reason: a rule you can be sanctioned under should be a rule you can read in advance.
2. Obiter is for studying law
It is a study tool for your own learning. You may use it for revision, note-taking, practice and preparation, on as many of your own devices as you like.
You may not:
- share your account, or let anyone else sign in as you;
- resell, sublicence or rent access, or run a service on top of it for other people;
- use it to build a competing product, or to train a machine-learning model on our content.
3. Academic integrity
This is the one that matters most, because it is the one that can cost you a degree.
You may not:
- submit anything Obiter generated as your own work, in any assessment — essays, coursework, dissertations, take-home exams, mooting scripts, anything graded;
- use Obiter during a formal examination unless your institution has permitted it;
- use it to help anyone else do either of those things.
Obiter AI is built to refuse requests to write submittable work, and it will decline. That is a safeguard, not a permission structure: your institution's rules apply to you regardless of what the tool will or will not do, and they are stricter than ours.
4. Other people
You may not use Obiter to:
- harass, threaten, defame or impersonate anyone;
- upload material that is unlawful, or that infringes someone else's copyright;
- upload confidential information you are not entitled to share — including client files, case papers, or anything covered by a placement or vacation-scheme confidentiality undertaking;
- upload personal data about other people beyond what your own study genuinely requires. Bear in mind that document text is sent to our AI provider.
5. Our systems
You may not:
- attempt to gain unauthorised access to any account, system or data;
- scrape, bulk-download or systematically extract our case summaries, statutes, concepts or other content;
- run bots or automated tools against the service, except where we have said you may;
- upload malware, or deliberately try to break, overload or degrade the service;
- circumvent usage limits, storage limits, rate limits or paywalls.
Genuine security research is welcome and is not a breach of this policy where it follows the rules on our security page.
6. Storage
Storage is for your own study materials. Using Obiter as general file hosting, a backup target, a distribution point for paid third-party materials, or a way to share files at scale is not what the allowance is for, and Pro's unlimited storage is subject to the fair use clause in the Terms.
7. What happens if you break this policy
We would rather talk to you than switch you off. Our response is proportionate to what happened:
- Most cases: we contact you, explain the problem, and give you a reasonable chance to put it right.
- Repeated or deliberate breaches: we may limit specific features, or suspend the account.
- Serious cases — unlawful material, attacks on our systems, or conduct that puts other users at risk — we may suspend immediately and without notice.
If we suspend or terminate your account, we will tell you why unless the law prevents us. You may appeal through our complaints procedure, and an appeal is looked at by someone who was not involved in the original decision.
If we terminate a paid account for a breach of this policy, we do not refund the remainder of the period. If we terminate it for any other reason, we refund the unused part.
Your data is not deleted the moment an account is suspended. Suspension removes access; you keep the right to export your work, and we will help you do it.
8. Reporting a problem
If you have seen something on Obiter that breaks this policy, email support@obiter.site and tell us what and where. Security issues go to the address on our security page instead.
