AI in Obiter
Obiter is a study platform with AI features. Browsing the library, organising notes and managing your study schedule do not themselves require an AI response.
Which features use AI?
Obiter AI chat and essay feedback, chat titles and summaries, note summaries and note chat, flashcards and exam questions made from notes, practice question and essay generation, the automatic check of generated practice questions, flashcard generation, case analysis, Legal News insights, study recommendations, careers job summaries, reading scanned PDFs and grade transcripts, and recording transcription use AI. Some AI outputs, such as practice questions that pass the automatic check, case analyses, Legal News insights and flashcard templates, are shared with other students.
These features use Google Gemini and OpenAI GPT-5 models through OpenRouter, an AI gateway. Obiter sends zero-retention and no-training routing flags to OpenRouter. OpenRouter announced a Google safety-retention change effective 18 October 2026, and the account currently permits safety retention. We are checking how those settings interact and do not promise universal zero retention. Sampled requests used Google Vertex AI for Gemini and Microsoft Azure for GPT-5, but these samples do not establish the endpoint or region for every request. Obiter does not fix the processing region. Recordings over 20 minutes or 15 MB, and recordings that cannot be transcribed through OpenRouter, are sent directly to OpenAI’s Whisper model. Related-note suggestions can use OpenAI embeddings directly only where that is switched on; the register shows whether it is. Models may change or fall back when unavailable. Institution restrictions can disable features or specific models.
Dictation in the note editor uses the speech recognition built into your device or browser, not Obiter’s AI providers.
View the current feature and model register. This records current configuration; it does not identify how every historical item was created.
Your university’s rules come first
Use model answers for revision. Do not submit them as your own work. Check the AI rules for each assessment and acknowledge permitted assistance. Where editing is allowed, preserve your own original draft.
Do not upload university textbooks, assessment papers, teaching recordings or other people’s materials without permission. Do not upload personal, client or clinic information. Obiter is not automatically approved by your institution simply because a model or feature is available.
